If you had to chose one last meal what would it be? Steak, baked potatoes, salad. Maybe a Maine Lobster, shrimp some exotic six course meal or just a good hamburger and fries. Just think about it for once. If you knew that you were going to be taking your very last morsels of nutrition what in the world would you want to pass into your mouth for that one last HURRAH !
Me, I love raspberries and chocolate. Steak, lamb, salmon, watermelon, blackberries and did I mention raspberries and chocolate. Oh yeah ! Probably my most favorite food in the world - Raspberries plain no sugar, no ice cream, no chocolate just pop one in my mouth savour that sweet tangy taste and enjoy. Chocolate I love chocolate, but not just any chocolate - can't eat dark chocolate, love Hershey's syrup hate hot fudge.
D, loves cantelope, watermelon and dark chocolate. Steak, salmon, sashimi and Eggs Benedict, fresh salads with homemade oil and vinegar dressing. Oh yeah, probably one of his favorite foods in the world - sashimi ! He loves Hot Fudge Sundaes and Oreo Freezes especially the ones I make. He loves dark chocolate but not white chocolate. He likes Vodka Martinis - strong with 3 olives, shaken not stirred.
He has not eaten anything since February 22. Nineteen (19) days without nutritional substance. Can you guess of all the things listed above what his last meal was? Bet in a million years you can't.
When I got to reflecting back on the past 19 days I realized that D was living on the bread and the blood of the Lamb - THAT'S RIGHT - the last meal D had was Holy Communion. Daniel came to the house after church one Sunday and brought communion for D and I. The bread of life is the last morsel of food that has passed D's lips. D has never asked for another bite to eat or complained of being hungry.
What a powerful message that is to us - Jesus said "do this in remembrance of me." HE is the giver of life and promises eternal life if we follow HIM. HE is feeding and filling D with every breath that he takes. How long the bread of life sustains D's earthly body? How long before he moves to the banquet table with the Bridegroom for a full feast prepared just for him? How long before D and Jesus partake of all of Heaven's fare? I don't have the answer, all I know for sure is the table is set, the food is prepared and when D is called home, he will sit at the table with Jesus to share in the Kings banquet, never to be hungry or sick again. Can I get an AMEN ?
